Sowerbutt enjoyed visiting Jack Shakes, born Yacob Shakhnarovich, in his shop off Whitechapel Road for the conversation almost as much as for his workmanship. Jack, his younger sister and their parents fled Moscow in early 1917 after the Russian Tsar abdicated.
