Sowerbutt's Barber

"Heard from your sister, Bernie, old friend?” Pop asked. The barber looked sad. “Not for a few weeks, I ask the Spanish sailors down at the Docks in case a message has been passed on, but nothing. Good to get those couple of messages after Musso declared war, but it must be getting harder for her. Perhaps they are guarding the Docks at Genoa.”

Sowerbutt's Friend

Bernie White put the kettle on in the back of the shop. He was treated as a local, despite being born Benedetti Bianchi in Milan a couple of years before the Kingdom of Italy joined the Allies in the Great War. He had jumped ship from MS Augustus, Italys floating cruise palace, in Gibraltar in 1933 to escape an angry husband. Ending up at the East India Docks, he took on a new British identity with the help of Sowerbutt.

Sowerbutt's Suspicions

Sowerbutt nodded: “One of our part-timers popped round to a house in Whitechapel. She was suspicious about the three Irish lads there. They weren’t working, but had plenty of cash. She found the letter under the bed. I thought it might have some double meanings, a code like. Working as spies for Jerry?”

Sowerbutt's Call-Up

"By the way, you are alright with the call-up? Don’t want you disappearing, all of a sudden.” “Irregular heartbeat, Jimmy, always had it. Have to see a specialist every six months, costs a fortune.” “We must talk, Bob. Genuine exemption papers can be worth a lot of money, we could borrow them and give you a percentage."

Sowerbutt's Books

Sowerbutt grinned: “I want to buy some books. You heard about South Hallsville School, terrible business. A few of the survivors are spread around different schools, but the rest are running wild on the streets. The curate at St Luke’s, Father Goose, is trying to open a school for them in the church."

Sowerbutt's Question

"How is Olive? She was just a girl when I last saw her,” Sowerbutt smiled. “You know she was detained?" Bob Hawks said. "Saw her a couple of times in Holloway, now she’s over on the Isle of Man. Still committed to the cause, won’t hear a word said against Oswald Mosley. Had a letter the other day, censored, of course.”

Sowerbutt's Books

The bell tinkled as Sowerbutt pushed open the shabby door of Kibble & Hawks, Booksellers. It was a parallel universe to the bustle of Charing Cross Road outside. Quiet save for the loud tick of a clock, ceiling-high shelves jammed full and precarious piles escorting the customer inside from the doorway and lining the gangways.

Sowerbutt's Transmission

A sergeant from the Royal Corps of Signals sat in front of a Telefunkens transmitter, which had found its way to Norfolk from Hamburg via Lisbon and Cork. “Right, old girl,” the slight military man said. “Ten minutes to transmission time. Let’s go over the report from the Ghost’s network one final time. It is water-tight, but we’ll just make sure.” Rosetta tossed her raven hair, which had been pinned up inside her ATS cap.

Sowerbutt's Hut

The nondescript hut was the same as any of the others that housed the Royal Norfolks at Weybourne Camp. But it was strictly off-limits. Two conscripts from Cromer, who had been caught sitting on each other’s shoulders in turn and peering through the taped windows, were given a thrashing by the Regimental Police and seven days in the detention hut.

Sowerbutt's Search

Sowerbutt said: “The birds have flown the coop. Search the place from top to bottom, every square inch. But keep it quiet, don’t want the neighbours to hear anything. These lads weren’t raising money for the fun of it. I want to know what they were up to.”

Sowerbutt's Cosh

Sowerbutt said: “Ideally lads, we’ll cosh and rope them and bring the van round to take them to The River. Spaghetti and I will have shooters and you, Panda, bring your sawn-off. But last resort; attracts attention if we start pulling triggers. Don’t mind if there’s an air raid on."

Sowerbutt's Stroll

Three men sauntered along the terrace-lined street that ran off Whitechapel Road. With the moon covered by smudges of cloud, the only light was from their torches covered by the regulation tissue paper and the occasional chink peeping through the black-out curtains. Their eyes flickered along the street in case an ARP patrol materialised out of the gloom. Few people ventured out at night with the blackout and the bombs; regulars in the pubs had long settled in.

Sowerbutt's Highways

The attractive woman nodded: “Drop me a postcard from Cousin Joe when you arrive. We’ve been building highways in Missouri and it has been the devil’s own job to persuade the farmers to part with their land.” “Be delighted, ma’am,” Joe said. “My cousin and I will be looking for gainful employment when we arrive in Baltimore.”

Sowerbutt's Plot

Harriet Warfield looked at the Irishman in his twenties, stretched out in the backroom of a Luton terrace. “My involvement must be kept absolutely confidential. How will you manage that with these men running around the farmyard unloading crates?” Joe did not blink an eyelid. “With the help of my trusty Tommy-gun, ma’am. There’ll be no loose ends left.”

Sowerbutt's Ambush

“They’ve agreed to ambush the army convoy and deliver the goods to the farm. Our people will be dancing in the streets of Derry when news spreads about the English soldiers being shot,” Joe McCormack smiled. “Spare me your partisan details,” the attractive woman snapped. “The arrangement is that you hand over the crates and we’ll give you the $5,000 in greenbacks. A fast car will be waiting and I want to be on the London train before the plods wake up.”
