The nightly performance had started. The drone of Dorniers and Heinkels, the occasional large flash as Jerry bombs hit a sugar warehouse or paint store, tongues of flame and billowing clouds of smoke, searchlights streaking the night sky, tracer from the anti-aircraft defences arching upwards.
