The retired writer for the East London Pioneer, who still has the notebook from his early 1960s interview with Sowerbutt, said: "Petrol was scarce with the currency restrictions and civilians didn't get their allocations back until '48. He had big cash reserves from the war and bought thousands of pounds worth of petrol from the GIs. He stored it in tanks on the disused airfields and sold it for a fortune."
